For the record, this ad hoc coalition now accused of being “special interest” groups did invite a representative of the County Fire and Rescue Association to participate in our meetings. Buck Payne, representing the association, did attend some but not all of our meetings. Other representatives of fire and rescue companies would have been welcome to attend our meetings if they had expressed an interest in doing so. In fact, a few private citizens unaffiliated with any of our groups did just that, and we included them in our meetings.
There’s a name for our involvement in this public business: It’s called citizenship. It requires effort, going to long, often boring, public meetings; reading the local newspaper; asking questions and expressing views to your county supervisor or planning commission member; studying the issues, which are often complex and confusing.
