there was many chinquapin bushes. The soil there must have been just right for this particular bush. This is a small version of the chestnut. It had the same prickly bur as the larger chestnut.
In the middle of September when they were ready to gather, the bur would be about half open and the chinquapin would be dark brown to black and juicy. They only lasted about two weeks, as they would become dry inside and wormy.
