autumn comes, and the annual baking for the upcoming holidays begins. With that comes the smells of cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg that make the dishes tantalizing to the nose as well as the eyes and palate. A dose of vanilla adds to the pleasing sensations.
Those of us fortunate enough to have a fireplace or wood stove can enjoy the warmth of a small fire to break the chill of a cool autumn night. Tossing some orange peel or a cinnamon stick into the embers lends an extra joy for the nose.
Perhaps my favorite part of the season is getting ready for Halloween. It usually takes at least one whole weekend to transform the yard and porch into a testimony to my favorite season — to hide ghosts, witches and other creepy things among the pumpkins, and arrange com stalks and colorful mums that will stay out until Thanksgiving, weather permitting.
I usually bake up a storm at this time of year, too, and cook lots of meals in my two crock pots.
