My dad was great with his hands. He could build anything.
He built the first TV set in the town where I grew up, and he built a sailboat when I was in law school, and almost anything else that struck his fancy in between. If he were alive today, I’m certain that he would have built a computer by now.
Now my dad, being an engineer, was very precise. He followed the old saying of carpenters — “Measure twice and cut once” — to the letter. Naturally, being a kid, his insistence on perfection was off-putting to me, to say the least.
I sometimes helped him when he was building the sailboat. One day we screwed down the little rail along the outside of the deck. It wasn’t good enough to get that thing screwed down tight. In addition, every screw head had to be pointing fore and aft on the boat. For aesthetics’ sake, I guess.
