Standen Still, home to songwriter Bill Hopkins and Judge Joseph Gale was completed in 1997. The house was designed by Washington, D.C. architect, Michael Holt and built by local contractor, Lee Levick.
More than a decorating style, Arts and Crafts is a celebration of quality, integrity, and simplicity in both life and design. Popular from the late 19th century until World War 1, it drew heavily on earlier pre-machine age styles, such as medieval and Gothic.
Though this marriage of philosophy and style has its origins in the mid-19th century, the finely crafted furniture, subtly colored pottery and textiles, and handsome micashaped lamps have remained popular. They are as beautifully fitting in Standen Still as they were at the turn of the century.
Standen Still truly pays tribute to a leader of the Arts and Crafts movement, William Morris (18341896), who in 1893 designed the interiors of Standen, a country home that is now a National Trust historic property in Sussex, England. '
