Symptoms often begin with difficulty sleeping. In fact, sleeplessness is sometimes the biggest problem women face as they approach menopause. Lack of sleep can affect a woman’s mood and health, in addition to her normal coping mechanisms.

Hot flashes are probably the most widely recognized symptoms of menopause, and 75 percent of menopausal women experience them. They can happen day or night, and usually last 30 seconds to several minutes. While some women have hot flashes with uncomfortable frequency, others escape this life change without ever having to deal with them.

Sleep problems and hot flashes are definitely unpleasant, but don’t have the serious physical consequences that accompany bone loss, another problem consistent with menopausal women.
