Treatment for sports injuries varies depending on the type and severity of the injury.

For mild cases, rest, applying ice, compressing with an ace bandage and elevating the injury above the heart are recommended. A minor ankle sprain can take one to three weeks to heal, but a torn knee ligament can take weeks or months. More serious injuries may require physical therapy and in extreme cases surgery may be necessary.

Both men and women sustain basically the same kinds of injuries. However, damage to the anterior cruciate ligament in the knee is being seen more frequently in women. It is most common in female basketball and soccer players.

While there is speculation in the medical community about this kind of injury, no one knows exactly why it occurs so often.
