a fluoroscopy monitor. When he gets to the site of a blockage, he can inflate a tiny balloon to expand the vessel, or place a stent, and restore the full diameter of the vessel. No surgery is necessary and the patient usually can go home immediately.
“Balloon angioplasty was first used to restore blood flow in the vessels of the heart,” said Markert. “Now we can use a similar technique to correct blockages anywhere in the body.”
Markert says that PVD is one of the most under-diagnosed medical conditions. Today, physicians know more about it than they once did, and Markert recommends that people get familiar with it, too.
