At its September meeting the Rappahannock County Garden Club viewed Candace Clough’s slides of Westmore, an estate on Nantuckett Island.
Ms. Clough, an estate gardener here in Rappahannock, formerly worked at Westmore. She showed views of the estate’s many different gardens, and demonstrated the use of pots and containers of plants as a means of adding color quickly and cutting down on maintenance.
In horticulture, club members Virginia Scott and Elbe Kreamer won blue ribbons for their fern entries. Ruth Baumgardner, Carol Miller, Mary Priest, Betty Wood, and Maggie Bracewell all won blue ribbons for their perennials; the flowers entered were chrysanthemum, rose, sedum, phlox, dahlia, and scabosia.
Flowering tree and shrub entries included buddleia (butterfly bush), caryopteris, and Rose of Sharon; Carol Miller, Betty Wood, Virginia Scott, and Charlotte Laing were the blue ribbon winners in this category. Carol Miller also won “best in show” for her white re-blooming iris named “Total Recall”.
