age that leads to melanoma occurs before age 20, people still need to protect ourselves from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation all their lives. Limiting exposure and using a good sunscreen are the best methods.
Now, with summer past, people will certainly be out in the sun less, but Sherman said that being conscious of skin cancer has to be a year-round commitment.
Change isn’t
always good
Sherman recommends taking a periodic inventory of moles and other pigmented skin areas. Becoming familiar with what is normal for your body will make it easier to see when something is changing.
“Change” is the operative word when it comes to melanoma. The surest sign of melanoma is any kind of change to a mole or freckle. These include changes in color, shape, size and feel.
Moles that look asymmetrical, have an irregular border or color, or a diameter greater than 6mm are suspect.
“While sun exposure can play an important role in melanoma, the risk of developing it is not solely suninduced,” said Sherman. “That’s why it’s important to look for moles on the soles of your feet and on your scalp.
