Curriculum and Instruction update
Richard Smith. Director of * Curriculum and Instruction, provided the Board with ‘ updates on his work in remediation recovers- and in the areas of mathematics and social studies. Mr. Smith noted that the State Department of Education's initiative focuses * on remediation of those skills required by Standards of" Learning (SOL), and requires that remediation support be provided to those students who have not given evidence of subject mastery.
He said that compulsory after-school remediation recovery will be provided, and that 1 13 of 16 budgeted teacher extended day contracts have been filled to that end. Dr. Gangel has drafted a letter to parents on the subject of afterschool remedial programs, and he said that the program will be put into effect once transportation issues have been resolved.
