What to do if...
The good news is that melanoma, though life-threatening, is usually easily detected and corrected if caught early. The standard treatment is surgical removal of the mole. If it has not spread too deeply, that may be where the treatment ends.
More advanced cases of melanoma must be treated with other traditional forms of therapy, like chemotherapy.
There is nothing quite as fine as a bright, sunny day. But it comes with a price. This year, more than one million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the United States. More than 51,000 of them will turn out to be melanoma.
“There is no such things as a safe tan,” said Dr. S. Elizabeth Whitmore, professor of dermatology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. “A suntan is the skin’s response to an injury and every time you tan you accumulate damage to the skin, as well as accelerating the aging process and increasing your risk of skin cancer.”
