Black women have the highest rates of obesity among all racial and ethnic groups in the U.S., and the numbers are rising.

As black women continue to gain weight, their chances of suffering from Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, certain forms of cancer and high blood pressure also increase.

Findings recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association indicate "that factors such as obesity, poor . diet and lack of exercise contribute to the high incidence of Type 2 diabetes in adults, especially in black women.

The good news is that black women can reach or maintain a healthy weight by making easy changes in their lifestyles, according to the Weight-control Information Network, a national information service of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, a part of the National Institutes of health.
