As the event wound down and cake was served, two staff members from the Fauquier County Health Department’s Maternity Clinic noted changes over time in public support for breast-feeding.
Bridget Goddin, a WIC breast-feeding peer counselor, noted a historical reluctance in the area to support breast-feeding, which she hopes is changing over time.
Anne O’Connor, nutritionist and breastfeeding coordinator at the Health Department, complimented the walk for its “positive way to get people out for a good cause.” She noted that society “has been out of practice (with breastfeeding) for two generations. There are a lot of mothers and grandmothers who did not experience it.”
The children at the event were busy blowing bubbles, shaking rattles, and eating chips. None seemed so see what the big deal was about breast-feeding.
Which made their parents smile.
