Debating Jim Oyster, J.D., L.L.M., of Castleton is like being at the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. He keeps arguing with me about something I didn’t say.
I have a semi-serious bone to pick with Mr. Oyster. Recently he wrote a long opinion piece in which he state incorrectly that I had based my opposition to the Faith Based Initiative plan on some sort of “liberal interpretation” of the First Amendment. I had not done that, but I had warned about the merging of church and state, and quoted Jefferson’s admonition regarding the First Amendment’s intent, i.e., that it was intended to “create a wall of separation between church and state.”
So I pointed out to him that Madison’s “original intent”, on which a “conservative interpretation” would be based, most likely would concur with Jefferson's thought
