Four-to-one to
deny rezoning

For the second time in three nonths the Board of Supervisors affirmed its dedication to the County's Zoning Ordinance and Comprehensive Plan, and it dismissed the recommendation of the Planning Commission to approve a rezoning in the Jackson District.
At the well-attended evening session of their October meeting, the Board voted four-to-one to deny Thornton and Iva Lam the right to rezone their 27-acre parcel from agricultural to rural residential, and to subdivide it to permit their son David and his wife Stacy to build a home there and be able to "attend to us in our old age."
Despite broad support from the Lams' neighbors for the rezoning, the Board, with the exception of Jackson District Supervisor Ron Frazier, followed the precept that a rezoning has to be for the public good and not for the benefit of an individual.
County Administrator John McCarthy reported that there were 146 signatures on letters (mostly form letters, he said) supporting the application, and there were "a dozen or so" in opposition.
