One hundred years ago 4H was “born” in Iowa to the “Mother of 4-H" Jessie Field, a schoolteacher.
Ms. Field found the need to teach youth the improved scientific farming methods and efficient home management. She started after school meetings called the Girls Home Club and the Boys Corn Club.
Meeting on alternate days, the girls studied gardening, cooking, sewing and other homemaking arts, while the boys learned to view agricultural with a scientific eye.
Soon Ms. Field’s students were going home telling their parents the wonderful new things they w7ere learning after school. Rapidly these after school educational clubs turned into the organization known as 4-H.
Rappahannock County 4H has been strongly represented for over 50 years. The areas of learning 100 years ago are still offered in today's 4-H Program. 4-H Volunteer Leaders make the 4-H Program. Without this caring and giving group of people, there would be no 4H program in Rappahannock County. We deeply thank them.
