Superin tenders Helen Williams and Assistant Superintendent Jack Raines. Mr. Raines reported that various greenhouse materials and supplies had been donated by businesses and individuals including the Amissville Nursery, Wal-Mart, Battlefield Farms, Ebenezer Heights Greenhouse, Jeff Brown, and the Rappahannock Farmers Coop.
Mrs. Williams added that the greenhouse is already being used two or three times a week by biology and special education students, and she noted that teacher Patti Waddell wanted to do a small fund raiser selling pansies at next week's parentteacher meeting.
Employees, volunteers subject to
background checks
Mr. Jack Raines passed out forms and FBI fingerprint cards to Board members, and reminded them of the requirement that all employees and volunteers undergo criminal record and social service background (to check on any record of child abuse) checks. He said that in January all school volunteers will be required to complete the forms and be subjected to the checks as well.
Board members discussed the requirement for background checks of all volunteers, and Mr. Raines noted that it was not a State requirement. Both members Rose Ann Sharp and Franklin Warner suggested restricting background checks on volunteers to only those who may be alone with children and Mrs. Sharp added that the requirement should not apply to parent volunteers either.
Mrs. Sharp said that she wanted to bring this existing requirement to fight "because of the public perception" that the background checks are not performed.
Chairman Wesley Mills asked that the issue of background checks for volunteers be tabled until the Policy and Legal Committee has had an opportunity to review it and make recommendations.
Other activities
• Mrs. Williams reported that the Board of Supervisors approved the October appropriation of $234,202, of which all but $20,000 reflects revenue received from grants obtained by schools' staff. She also noted that more than $558,000 in grants have been awarded to RCPS this year, and that successful grant proposals were prepared by Jack Raines,
