From Page A1

Afghanistan. The tragedy of its destruction, first by the Soviet armed forces and then by the Taliban, has obscured in the public’s mind the real nature of the country and its people.

Tb help us see behind the headlines, Headwaters has arranged an illustrated lecture, “The Afghanistan That Was”, to be held in the Rappahannock Country High School Band Room on Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m.

The speaker will be William Bechhoefer, professor of architecture at the University of Maryland, who had the opportunity fronf 1973-74 to serve as a Fulbright-Hayes Professor in the School of Architecture in Kabul, Afghanistan. While in Afghanistan, he was able to travel widely and developed a deep attachment to the couhtry. High school students, faculty, and the general public are encouraged to attend what should be a fascinating lecture.
