Also in August, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) officials met in Winchester to inform interested parties that a plan developed to improve air quality in Virginia showed Frederick County and the Shenandoah National Park failed to meet a new 8-hour average ozone standard. About three-quarters of this ozone came from vehicles, primarily on 1-81.
If winds carrying acid depositions and low-level ozone can affect the Shenandoah National Park in a harmful manner, they are also affecting Rappahannock County.
As to the cleansing capability of the county’s soils, an October 1988 report on groundwater pollution potential of Rappahannock County noted the county had “much to be thankful for with regards to its relative susceptibility to groundwater contamination, but nevertheless several areas have been demonstrated to be of concern.” In other words, in most areas the soil can cleanse water pollution.
