Celebrate

4-H week

A rare occurrence has taken place in Rappahannock

County: two businesses/organizations are celebrating

their 100th anniversary this year.

In September, there was a countywide celebration for the Rappahannock National Bank's century of service to citizens. This week, Oct. 6-12, marks the 100th year of service and dedication of 4-H clubs across the country.

Even though 4-H did not officially begin in the state of Virginia until 1908, the state and our county will celebrate with others across the nation throughout this week.

On Saturday, 4-H members and their leaders will gather at the Rappahannock Park for a centennial celebration. The Rappahannock National Bank is sponsoring a cake contest with first, second and third prizes to be awarded.

Many of the 4-H clubs will have displays of their efforts and hopefully entice even more youngsters to join and become involved in our 4-H affairs. Nearly 200 of our county's children are involved in one of the 20 4-H specialty clubs that meet on a monthly basis here, to teach children such skills as gardening, sewing, shooting, cooking, making crafts, caring for dogs and livestock, and learning about nature and performing arts. ' Many adults volunteer their time and talents to these clubs and programs to make sure they continue and survive. Hazel Zinn-Day is constantly seeking ways to make 4-H real to our children. She is the backbone of 4-H in the county. Children adore her. She works extremely hard to make sure the programs are exciting and enrich their lives. We encourage everyone to attend the centennial celebration on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Rappahannock Park and help county youngsters celebrate National 4-H Week.
