As a backup plan for a water supply for the Clevenger's Corner Village Center, Culpeper County has studied the feasibility of building two reservoirs in that area. The combined reservoirs could hold well over four billion gallons of water. Water would be pumped out of the Rappahannock and Hazel Rivers to join water impounded by local streams.

Since the Rappahannock and Hazel Rivers flow out of Rappahannock County, one might ask about the quality of water in this county. How well does nature’s three defenses against water pollution, vegetation, soil, and surface water, work here?
Residents should appreciate that 60 percent of Rappahannock County is covered with forestland. Much of the remaining land is covered with grasses used for grazing cattle. We thus have a good start on mitigating the effects of water pollution caused by acid rain and low-level ozone.
