• The Board approved the budget calendar for the year that shows the first budget draft due by Feb. 11, 03 and development of a budget brochure for the public by March 20, 03.
• The Board reviewed and approved a modified vision, mission and goals statement for the 2002-2003 school year. • Mr. Raines reported on donations of purchased items for the reading program including more than $2,000 worth of supplies by Headwaters, $1,325 by the PTO for a computer on which to put reading program list information, and a donation of reading program software by Barbara Wheatley.
• Mr. Raines also reported on the resignations of Robert Pullen (RCES custodian) and Wanda Parsons (Special Education Director's secretary), and the hiring of Wendy Reid as a cafeteria substitute, Karen Adams as a substitute teacher, and of Sandra Gourley as a secretary.
• Public Commenter Ron Makela observed that the Central Office situation has improved markedly since July. "Things are going on in a very positive way," he added, and said that Superintendent Williams was responsible.
• The Board discussed revised policies on gifts, holidays/annual leave, the sick leave bank, and a package of policy revisions made as a result of VSBA and legislative changes. The holidays/annual leave and sick leave bank policies were adopted and the others tabled.
• Board member Rosa Crocker reported that two South African visitors, one an elementary school principal and the other a minister, in the U. S. as part of a leadership training course, spent a day at the elementary school and were effusive in their praise for the atmosphere, resources, level of student attention, and the community involvement apparent at RCES. She said that the visit went so well that some sort of project or exchange between RCES and the South African principal's school would be investigated.
