The complications include a fire on the boat, a talented female impersonator called the “Living Bodhavista,” and a missing baby prince. The film also has great river scenes, a cool monkey, big buddhas, bad opera, and witty, clever, masks. In the end, after the big secret is revealed, and Grandpa is released from jail, having been accused of kidnapping the aforesaid baby prince, all ends well, with the brave, endearing, little urchin becoming an apprentice, studying the art of masks. This sweet film provides a small look at Chinese poverty of the time, and how ordinary people lived.

It was shot on location in the Dolpo regions of Nepal’s Himalayan Mountains. In addition to spectacular scenery, the movie was shot in letterbox, so there’s no distortion.
