For the month of October, according to the Hagerstown Tbwn and Country Almanack, temperatures will be below average with precipitation above average for the month.

Weather watch: Fair and mild, (10); showers and storms (11, 12) with fair and colder weather (13, 14, 15). Showers (16, 17); fair and cool (18,19, 20) with light rain or snow (21, 22, 23,24, 25). Partly cloudy (26,27, 28) with fair and cool temperatures (29, 30, 31).

Full Moon: The Full Moon in October will occur on Oct. 21 and is considered the Hunter’s Moon for 2002. Also known as Yellow Leaf Moon because of all of the leaves turning colors at this time of the year.

Hobdays: Columbus Day is celebrated on Monday, Oct. 14 and United Nations Day falls on Oct. 24. Halloween is on Thursday, Oct. 31.

The Garden: Rake leaves so they don’t block bght to the lawn, shred or mulch and add to the compost pile. Fertilize and check the soil’s pH levels. If too acidic, apply lime. Remove all dead or dying plants and add those to the compost pile as well.
