Lottie occasionally got into mischief all by herself. One memory which particularly pleased her had to do with peaches. “When I wasn’t good, Miss Mattie “switched" me, but mostly she’d lock me up in a dark closet.” One time she put Lottie in the cellar where the canning was kept. There were canned peaches in a barrel. She took out four or five jars, opened them up, ate the whole ones and then placed the half full jars around the barrel.
When Miss Mattie came down and saw what had happened, she said, “you opened them up, you eat them."
Lottie recollects, “I didn’t get another thing to eat ‘til I’d eaten them all. I never did that trick again." She added, “Miss Mattie taught me everything I learned.”
Marrying time
As Jim Bill and Lottie grew up, Jim Bill became a lawyer and married Miss Millie Thornton. Miss Millie helped as her husband's secretary’ and Lottie helped raise all five of Jim Bill’s children. “When Miss Millie came home from the hospital with a new baby, I’d run out to the car.
