A substantial portion of the March meeting of the Washington Town Council was spent on the issue of the Independence Day celebration for 2002.
Not only did the Council receive and discuss a progress report from George Rosenbaum, volunteer chair of the ad hoc Fourth of July Committee, but they approved the expenditure of funds to send Richie Burke, Gary Settle, Steve Critzer and Jerry Goebel to a fireworks certification class in Ellicott City, Md., thus moving closer to fulfilling their implicit requirements when they passed a motion in January that would prohibit the July 4th fireworks if no one certified in the use of pyrotechnics was available to set them off.
Mr. Rosenbaum provided handouts detailing the committee’s membership and functions, the plan and schedule for events, and a pro forma budget for the 2002 celebration. He told the Council that a 3 p.m. start is projected for the celebration this year, and that present plans call for an hour-long parade starting at 4 p.m. and featuring the Sperryville Fire Department’s horse brigade, fire trucks, vintage cars, drummers, and “flags and other patriotic symbols,” that the Kid Pan Alley Band would be the main music act, that booths this year would consist of local food vendors and local non-profit organizations, and that children’ exhibits
