With furniture, StiefF recommends starting with a computer desk and a credenza for storage. For lighting, she recommends task lighting for the work you are doing. She also said it is important to be sure that the lighting does not cause glare on the computer.
Especially in houses with children, soundproofing is also important.
Stieff said hardwood floors, a big space and bare walls are all things that will make sound louder.
One issue Stieff said does not seem to be of big importance to people is a separate entrance to the home office. She said most people have an office somewhere else where they can meet clients, and the home office is more for telecommuting.
In older houses with less space, it can be more of a challenge to find office space. One alternative is to convert the garage into a home office.
