made him itch afterward. Thinking the hoy was just trying to get out of work, Ogren took a leaf from one of the plants in the bed and rubbed it up and down on his own arm, saying, “See, no rash."

He then told the student to get to work.

About five minutes later, Ogren’s arm was covered in a painful rash. He moved the boy to another task immediately.

That night Ogren went to his local bookstore to buy a book on allergy free gardening. He laughed as he said, “It wasn't there.”

Ogren and his students began researching allergies to plants. After years of research, (not only with those students) Ogren has created the first scale for rating allergy potential in all plants. It is called the Ogren Plant Allergy Scale, or OPALS.
