Taylor said she doesn’t work on what’s trendy. It’s the little black dress theory of design — work classically, not according to w’hat is popular. Work with what people already have such as paintings and rugs and don’t worry about what colors are the latest thing.
“If someone wants an emerald green room that’s fine, but they have to understand it will affect the rest of the house,” Taylor said.
Taylor is skeptical of amateurs working on paint effects, such as sponging and rag rolling. She said the next owners of the home often don’t like the effect and have to sand it off the walls. Of all the current paint effects, she finds glazing to be the best thing happening. She said it gives paint interest and depth, especially with the right lighting.
Stieff agreed that glazing is popular now. She also said wallpaper that looks like the faux finishes is popular.
