garden beds.

Adding topsoil to existing plants can be beneficial, if done correctly.

The cleanup

First, stretch. Limbering up those leg, abdominal and back muscles can help prevent an injury and aching muscles at the end of the day.

Start by cutting back all necessary perennials and removing dead annuals. Don’t cutting back shrubs such as boxwoods until early or midApril. Early cutting can leave the plant vulnerable to an unexpected freeze and the plant will have that yellowedburnt look, until you trim again.

Plants that normally don’t . get cut back, like lavender or artemesia, can be lightly trimmed or formed to specifications at this time. Cut lavender back only a couple of inches to encourage new growth.

Now, begin removing all debris and cuttings from the beds.
