Paper dolls were used to promote movie stares, celebrities and even Barbie dolls.
The first paper doll was Little Fanny in London in the early 1800’s. However, paper dolls did not become popular in the United States until around 1828, by a company known as McLoughlin Brothers. As paper became easier and cheaper to produce, paper dolls became very popular, particularly in many of the women’s magazines.
Ladies Home Journal introduced Lettie Lane in 1908. Good Housekeeping introduced Polly Pratt around 1913. Betsy McCall appeared in the McCall’s magazine in 1951, and was probably the best known of all the paper dolls.
