Suffice it to say that many people still believe in dowsers. They feel certain individuals have an in-bom affinity with the earth, an aura that lets them find water by dowsing. For $12 in Rae’s Deli in Sperryville, you can buy a “Seasoned Dowser” do-it-yourself kit, consisting of two “sensitive” 100 percent copper wires, with sleeves for pivoting motion. Or you can hire a dowser.

There is an American Society of Dowsers. Most scientific tests run on dowsers, though, have come to the conclusion that they have a 50-50 chance of finding water, whether using dowsing rods, a pendulum, or the traditional yshaped peach tree or willow tree limb. You have to have faith to use this method. Since four gallons per minute did not solve the Tbwn of Washington’s needs, they hired three tankers a day, each hauling in 3,600 gallons of water, to keep the town going before a good rainfall provided respite. In April 1981, a geologist from Virginia’s Department of Mines and Mineral Resources, examining maps, came up with five potential well locations with good recharge, e.g., replenishment.

In June, Larry LeHew of Front Royal once again came over with his drilling rig. He drilled into the most favorable spot, just outside the town boundary. He hit water that flowed at a rate of 150 gallons per minute (216,000 gallons per day). Letting it flow for 53 hours proved that the source was sustainable.

The Clevenger’s Comer Village Center Plan calls for 600,000 gallons per day (417 gallons per minute). Can a well produce that much water? In 1912, a 702-foot well was drilled near the dried-up Salado River in Texas. It produced 10 million gallons per day (6,944 gallons per minute). In the early 1930s, Tacoma, Washington, drilled a well that yielded 9 million gallons per day.

In 1991, investors in Texas spent $1 million to drill the world’s largest well, for use with a catfish farm. It came in at 57.6 million gallons per day (40,000 gallons per minute). This was so much water that in December 2000, the San Antonio Water System purchased the catfish farm and most of the water rights for $9 million.
