Simply put, it is my belief that James Madison (who also once represented this district in Congress) intended when he and Mason wrote the Bill of Rights that the First Amendment’s protection of speech specifically meant the protection of unpopular political speech, and that flag desecration is clearly political expression.
I am no legal scholar, but I don’t think we need to amend the Constitution to deal with a few wackos who are trying to get attention. As I suggested to the American Legion, ‘The best thing to do with flag burners is to drop them off at the Legion Hall on a Saturday night around 11 p.m.”
Since Mr. Cantor has issued these challenges, and since I am happy to comply, surely he will be excited to comply with my challenge. I ask that he join me in debating these and other issues in every town in every county in the district. I ask that we go together to country stores, barbershops and beauty parlors, civic organizations, fire halls, comer drug stores, and anywhere else there are Seventh District voters.
In fact, I ask that every Republican county committee in the district invite me to speak to their concerns.
We the people are paying Mr. Cantor a very good salary to engage in this public responsibility. I am serious. And I await his good faith reply. Next week, 111 talk about that balanced budget amendment, just like Mr. Cantor has demanded.
