He was born June 3, 1926 in Rappahannock County, a son of the late William Ludwell Hitt and Delzie Florence Butler Hitt.
Mr. Hitt retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation after 26 years of service.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Mrs. Kitty Elizabeth Hitt of Culpeper; a son, Donald Ray Hitt of Madison; one daughter, Jackie Settle and her husband, William of Culpeper and three grandchildren.
Additional survivors include two brothers, Turner Hitt of Culpeper and Downing Hitt of Castleton and three sisters, Lucille Dellinger of Castleton, Lena Shifflett of Barboursville and Erma Jenkins of Washington.
He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by six brothers and three sisters.
A graveside service was conducted on Saturday, March 16 at Fairview Cemetery with Pastor Ray Berry officiating.
Found and Sons Funeral Chapel in Culpeper was in charge of the arrangements.
