If any bare roots are showing in the beds or near plants, add a little topsoil, but just enough to cover the naked roots.
Then you can add the mulch. Mulch works as a barrier against weeds. It also holds in moisture and keeps roots cool in hot summer months.
Make sure there is a 2- or 3-inch blanket of mulch throughout the beds, not just around plants.
I have found double-shredded tree stump mulch or bagged pine fines are the most aesthetically pleasing. These types are also looser than other types and allow tender bulbs or perennials to pop through more easily than nugget mulches.
For the final task, water down the mulch, soaking it well. This also helps to saturate the food into the soil.
Once you’re done, grab a chair, sit back and enjoy. Taking these steps and should make a garden into the peaceful place it should be. The plants should begin to show their gratitude almost immediately by providing a season full of blooms and fine foliage.
