laylor said many people go to the furniture store for their first home and buy a long couch, short couch, end table and lamp. As they get older they realize they need a change, but they don’t know what to do.

Another common mistake is to go to the store and buy an entire dining room set or bedroom set. Taylor advised against that.

“You buy the cookie cutter house and put the cookie cutter dining room in,” she said. Then you are no different from the other houses on your street.

Taylor said the challenge the decorator faces is being called after people paint, carpet and buy the wrong furniture.

One client bought a desk without measuring her study. She found the desk took up the whole room, not even leaving space for bookcases. She was very disappointed and ended up finishing a bigger room in her basement just for the desk. Taylor said prior planning can avoid many problems.
