A smaller rake called a Dutch shrub rate can also be handy for cleaning out leaf debris from perennials and shrubs, with less chance of harming tender plants.
A sharp pair of bypass shears or hand clippers is a necessity. Something to transport the debris from the garden to the compost pile or county land refuge will also be needed.
Another necessity is food or fertilizer for plants, such as balanced fertilizer that has equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. A 5-5-5 or a 10-10-10 combination is a fine mixture for the spring feeding.
If you have been using wood mulch, it can leach nitrogen from the earth. Bloodmeal is a good source for replacing nitrogen in the garden. Lightly dress beds with bloodmeal just before mulching.
