Emily Jane Hilscher is thought to have been among the first victims of the unfathomable tragedy that occurred at Virginia Tech when a fellow student, SeungHut Cho, shot and killed 32 people, and then himself

Opening prayer

Rev. Leah DeLong, pastor of both the SpenyyiBe Methodist Church and Flint Hill’s Memorial Methodist Church, opened the services with a prayer that called for honoring Emily and praying for all who were touched by this tragedy. In memorable words, Rev. DeLong noted:

“We gather here today for a common purpose—to remember Emily our daughter; our sister; our friend— and always your beloved child. Assure us that that though we hold her no more, she is secure in your everloving arms. We pray for the many other families who grieve in the face of death. We join others who pray for healing for those who are wounded. We pray for the Virginia Tech community that will, indeed, prevail. We remember that Jesus, who calmed a raging sea with a word, also spoke these words: ‘Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted.’ Comfort us, most gracious God. Heal the broken hearts among us.” „ Rather speaks of a “sense of place”

Erie Hilscher, Emily’s father, spoke of a “sense of place* as he recalled why the family loved Rappahannock so much. “We moved here 15 years ago to give our daughters a sense of place where you would know them and they would know you. We made the right decision in coming to Rappahannock. Thanks for reminding me that we are part of this community too’ * As he spoke, Hilscher recalled “special moments’ in his daughter’s Hfe. Among those he remembered with tender feelings were those that reflected the multidimensional character of his daughter. For instance, he could remember what she was like at home with a messy room and half-empty soda cans, how she interacted with her
