They say the young man who caused all this violence was bullied in high school and college. I don’t doubt the word of the reporters and researchers, but I have difficulty believing that’s all there is to it. We had a few bullies when I was in school, and we had a few people who were favorite targets of bullies.
But, human adolescent society is not unlike the society of other animals. There is a pecking order. There is a top dog, a succession of middle dogs, and there is a bottom dog. But that, alone, does not explain why someone would take the kind of action this individual did.
