If you among those of us who do not have horses, be sure to make the time to go on a trail ride with Sandra Cartwright-Brown. Sandra graciously took me and Anita Sherman out for a long ride on Friday afternoon, the perfect way to end a very tense week. In addition to enjoying the camaraderie of women and the magnificent scenery, we saw deer, wild turkey and a beautiful fat bear. Each trail ride ends with a glass of cold cider. I do not ride at all. I approached the ride on English saddles with some trepidation. Sandra quickly gave me just enough instruction, support and encouragement and I was able to really enjoy the ride. Rick Wasmund took us on a tour of the Copper Fox Distillery on Sunday afternoon. This is another Sperryville treasure that is not to be missed. Rick has studied with the masters in Scotland and Ireland and has introduced his own twist to the process of making a unique single malt scotch whiskey. The welcoming smell of apple and cherry wood permeates the building. Rick’s non-automated, careful process is carefully thought out and creative. There is a beauty to the symmetry of the barley drying in waves on the floor, the copper pots, the barrels and rows of bottles ready for distribution.
