Life's experience
An avid pony rider in his youth. Messier entered his first pony race at age 7 at the New Jersey Hunt Cm. At age 16, Meister rode his first jump race, and like Davies, has three Maryland Hunt Cups to his name. Meister likes the course at Great Meadow, but says there’s a little room for change.
“It’s such a beautiful raffing course, but I would like to see a little more height to it, like it had when it was first built," Meister said. “Most of the fences have all shrunk and settled into the ground. 1 think a lot of good jumpers get going too fast and mil over the smaller fences."
Davies agreed. *1 love the foci it's four miles It’s a very smooth course where you can really get into a rhythm if you’re on a good horse. I hope to send King hear to the Gold Cup if he runs well at the Manor. He won last yearfe Silver Cup and is training we& after hunting hard all year with the Elkridge-Harford."
Meister and Davies agree that one of the best courses at Great Meadow is the tricky SteeplethoQ. In the Steeplethon, horses must be able to negotiate both timber and hurdles. Mwstor was a**wwl bmt year with Earmark (Matt McCamm up) for 2005-06 leading timber owner hrv Naylor.
“It’s one of tiie most fun to ride in America," Meister said. I have ridden it many times, and knock wood, I am one of the few riders, maybe the onKthat has never gone off course.
