With the win, Gliding stamps himself as one of the nation’s speediest hurdlers: his record on the flat in his native New Zealand hinted at the turn of foot - he won the rich Group III Rotorua Cup over a mile and 3/8ths just before being imported to Fouf s barn in The Plains for owner Edgar Cato.
The final leg of the hurdle Triple Crown is May 19 at Radnor in Pennsylvania. The series is limited to so-called “novice” hurdlers, or horses that had not won over fences prior to March 1,2006.
In the day’s other racing, Irish native Murphy also won the Alfred Hunt open steeplechase aboard Irv Naylor’s Bon Fleur. Augustin Stables’ Ghost Valley earned a try at next week’s $100,000 Virginia Gold Cup with easy victory in the Middleburg Hunt Cup. Irish Embassy, the last homebred of the late Mikey Smithwick, won the Sport of Kings maiden, while Doug Fout saddled a second winner in Eldon Farm’s Shining Jack in the maiden claimer.
