Rappahannock County High School head baseball coach Jeff Jenkins does not talk about the big things that his Panthers need to do.
“We’re doing a lot of little things, and we’re winning,” he said. “We’re getting the good pitching. We’re getting the good hitting.”
And they are punishing the opposition.
Take the 11-2 drubbing of Bull Run District rival Clarke County, as an example.
Starting pitcher Adam Gessner earned his second win of the season, going the first four innings and striking out seven. Then, Will Miller earned the save, no-hitting the Eagles over the last three innings. He fanned five.
The Rappahannock hitters did their jobs, too. They scored five times in the first inning and six more times in the fifth.
In the first, Bobby Czekaj reached base on a bunt single, stole second and third and scored on a passed ball. Ethan Russell walked and came home on Miller’s single. Chase Tupper reached base on an error, driving in another run. After Travis Jenkins walked, Nathan Hartshorn’s groundout plated the inning’s fourth run. L.B. Settle closed the scoring with an RBI single.
Clarke made the game interesting with a pair of runs the second.
“I told our players that we needed to jump back on them again,” Jenkins said. “And we did.”
Rappahannock (8-2) scored six times in the fifth. Settle’s bases-clearing double highlighted the inning. Jonathan Butler and Czekaj also had RBI singles. Russell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to close the scoring.
