The late — and legendary — Mikey Smithwick, below right, is eighth on the all-time trainers’ list, with earnings in excess of $4.3 million from 1955 to 2000. Son Speedy, below left, was a leading amateur in the 1970s and ’80s. Nephew Patrick Smithwick, above, currently rides as an amateur. His father, professional A.P. Smithwick Sr., was five-time national champion jockey and remains a legendary ’chasing figure.
