Arundel offered a permanent home to the fabulous International Gold Cup when Rolling Rock folded in 1985.
Rolling Rock was a popular stop on the National Steeplechase Association’s fall circuit, with a weekend packed full of two days of championship racing, opening hunt for the hosting Rolling Rock Hounds, a hunter trial and horse show, and black tie dinners with big bands for five straight nights.
The Rolling Rock meet folded in the early 1980s, though, with the death of longtime chairman Alfred Hunt. If that name sounds familiar, it is because friends of Hunt memorialize the steeplechasing horseman’s name with a trophy presented at the Middleburg Spring Races.
