What’s a hurdle? Or are we
talking timber?
American steeplechase racing (Thoroughbred racing over jumps) includes competition over two types of jumps, phis a "combination course’* that combines both.
The majority of the races are over hurdles or National Fences. Made of plastic, a steel frame and foam rubber takeoff roll, the fences are 52 inches talL Horses brush through the top 6 inches or so of the National Fence.
About one-quarter of NSA races are over timber fences, made of boards or posts-and-rails. Heights vary depending on the course — the Maryland Hunt Cup features four miles over 5 foot fences. The Virginia Gold Cup is four miles over 4 foot fences. Timber races are longer than hurdle race and place a higher premium on precise jumping.

All horses racing in modern steeplechasing must be registered Thoroujghbreds. In the “old days’* of the sport, crossbred horses were not uncommon in the winner’s circle, hut todays U.S. sport requires registration with the Jockey Chib.
