Smith nears
long-jump
record

Rappahannock County High School’s boys and girls track-and-field teams put up several strong individual performances during team losses in their past two meets.
Among those highlights was Irving Smith’s secondplace finish in the long jump during the Panthers’ April 18 meet at Madison County. Smith’s distance of 21 feet was just 9 1/4 inches from the school record.
The senior also finished second in the triple jump and third in the 100-meter dash.
In the same meet, Evan Shankle won the discus and placed third in the shot put.
On the girls’ side, Marie Scavetti won the 100-meter hurdles and Sarah Smoot won the 400-meter run.
Because of Rappahannock schools’ spring break, which was during the week of April 9 to 13, only four Panthers attended the April 12 meet at Luray.
Scavetti won the 100meter hurdles and placed third in the 100-meter dash.
The meet had originally been scheduled for April 11 at Rappahannock, but the contractor hired to finish the new track has not completed the work. The Panthers were not scheduled to host any other meets this season.
