He’s out of the name mare as 2005 Derby winner Giacomo. This may sound like a good sign, but if you’re an odds man, you know that the odds of the same mare producing two Deifcy winners in three years are astronomical— somewhere on the order of Dick Cheney divorcing Lynne and marrying Nancy PeTosi.
To the knowledge of this writer, there is rally one living mare who has produced two Triple Crown race winners: Weekend Surprise, who produced Summer Squall and A.P. Indy, and she was being bred to the best stallions in the world. Tiago’s race in the Santa Anita Derby was probably the best of the mqjor preps. But it won't be his day. Toss Tiago.
Forget Curlin, the undefeated, untested Arkansas Derby winner. Runner and winner of three races, he is very talented. But, horses who have only run three races in their lifetime don’t win the Derby. He will also attempt to win as a horse with no starts at the age of 2. That hasn’t happened since 1882 when Apollo took the then-littleknown race. Curlin’s a talented horse. But hell be swallowed at the top of the stretch by many of the other more experienced runners. He might finish seventh,
