Derby. Not only are the curses too much to handle for Street Souse, the Bluegrass didn't set up like the Derby will. The fractions were slow and then fast, like a turf race; the Derby is almost always the opposite and will be this year. Street Sense is a fine horse, but the first Saturday in May won't be his day.
Dominican will also lose the Derby. For those of you who haven’t been paying attention recently, the Bluegrass Stakes at Keeneland hasn’t been as big a predictor of Derby winners recently. Just ask last year’s runaway winner, Sinister Minister—who?—a 16th-place finisher in the Derby. Again, this was because the styles of the two races and racetracks differ widely, although they are separated by less than 100 miles.
Scat Daddy is a nice, solid horse, but he doesn’t have the acceleration needed to achieve victory in the Derby. And, hell be coming off of a five-week layoff from the Florida Derby. Inis proved successful for Barbara last year, but he was the first in 50 years to complete the task Tm thinking it won’t happen this year.
Tiago, the new contender on the scene, ran an impressive race in the Santa Anita Derby, but you can cast him aside mi the big day.
